What we do

We are a not-for-profit charity dedicated to providing excellent care with a family feel. Friends of the Elderly have been supporting older people for over 100 years.

From serving up ‘Penny Dinners’ to WWI veterans, to pioneering innovations in dementia care, supporting older people is at the heart of what we do. Today the charity provides care home and day care services for older people, as well as grants for older people in financial difficulty.

We run care homes and day care services for older people including those living with dementia and memory impairment. We have our care homes in Bedfordshire, Dorset, Essex, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Worcestershire.

Through our charitable work, we provide grants for older people living on a low income and undertake projects that support older people to live fulfilled lives.

We are delighted that Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra is our President, and that Her Majesty The Queen was one of our patrons. Support from the Royal Family has helped us raise awareness of the challenges many older people face. Please see more from our president here.

What we're looking for

At Friends of the Elderly (FotE) we are looking for people who are passionate about care and want to support older people to live well in later life.

We support older people to live well through our care homes, day centres and grants programmes, allowing them to live in comfort and dignity. We put older people at the heart of all that we do.

We will always:

  • Promote enhanced wellbeing.
  • Strive for excellence.
  • Treat people with respect.
  • Keep everyone safe.

To ensure older people have access to safe, high-quality care and support services, social support, activities and opportunities, we are looking for people who are empathetic, respectful, self-motivated, flexible, reliable, willing to go the extra mile and able to work as part of a team.

We expect all our staff to live by our values in their daily activities and interactions with others, and we strive for an open culture where staff champion equality, diversity and inclusion for all, along with a genuine desire to help others.

We’re always learning and continually improving, so you’ll be eager to learn, develop and grow in whatever role you have with us, by taking advantage of the wide range of training and development programmes we offer.

Every day is different in care, and you’ll be supporting people to live the very best life they possibly can, helping alleviate loneliness and isolation. You’ll be supported too, not just by your team, but by a charity that values and cares for your wellbeing.
